Since 1934, Steinhafels Furniture has been a family-owned business providing quality home furnishings to southeastern Wisconsin. But did you know that Steinhafels also has a team of designers at most stores, who are ready to help you create that perfect space? The program is called “Decorating Solutions,” and it offers a fully customizable experience for the shopper!
Let’s face it, most of us would love to snazz up our house a bit, but we don’t have the cash to shell out for a full makeover. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be as expensive or time-intensive as you may think. Since I am not a design expert by any means, I am employing some help from one of our resident experts! For this blog entry I am using the Top 5 “Decorating on a Dime” tips from Decorating Solutions designer Dawn Adamec.
First, let’s start with a simple can of paint. It’s probably the most inexpensive thing you can buy, and it goes a long way. You can paint a whole room the same color, or have a focal point wall (three walls the same color, and one wall a different, complementary color). Don’t be scared to have fun with paint! If you are interested in a rich, deep color, try some tester pieces first. Slap a little color on the wall and live with it for a week or two and see how you like it.
Accessories are a another option. Pillows or throws can spark new life into existing furniture. Area rugs are another easy trick. Even on top of carpeting, an area rug can add color and pattern to a space. It’s like Art on the floor! It’s also a quick, affordable way to hide imperfections, or make an old floor look like new. Dawn’s third tip–clean up that greenery! Fake plants get dusty and dated. Trade out those large atrocities for simple grasses and twigs. Also, multiples of one type of greenery, rather than a bunch of random plants, makes for a cleaner look. You can also totally change it up for the season–leaves in the Fall, pine and bells for Christmas, and branches with bright flowers for Spring and Summer. And here’s a designer insider tip for you–use a hair dryer to blow the dust off those grasses!
Next, wall decor is a simple option that can really make a room truly your own. Either take existing wall decor and rearrange it, or trade it out for one big focal point wall item. These days the trend is not so much to have wall art spaced sporadically all over the walls, but to combine all of those pieces into one grouping on one wall–similar to a collage. It’s OK not to have something on each wall! This also applies to family pictures. Instead of pictures all over the place, make a picture grouping. You can also hang a family monogram on the wall.
Finally, roll up your sleeves and rearrange that furniture! This also may sound simple enough, but you won’t believe what a difference a little rearranging can make. Instead of having all of your furniture against the wall (which we tend to do), and having a big empty space in the middle, try angling the furniture off the wall to create multiple settings or vignettes. It makes your room cozier and more inviting. At Steinhafels, we make it easy to get ideas for sprucing up your space by having different vignettes on display. These groupings show which accessories go with each other, and many of the displays are grouped by color.
So go ahead and have some fun, and most importantly stay true to your style. We can all be a “designer”… you just have to push aside your inhibitions and let your imagination run free!
