DS Tip Of The Week: Making Your Patio A Fun Living Space

Summer is FINALLY here. Give your patio a fresh, fun, and lived-in feel as we enter these magical 4 months that we live for here in the Midwest!

Get out the notepad and jot down these pointers.  That’s right… it’s time for another Decorating Solutions Tip of the Week!  This week’s tip comes from Interior Designer Patti Stindt. Patti works at our Madison store, and helps customers in the area create the homes of their dreams.  She has some easy suggestions for transforming your patio with some summer sizzle.

Steinhafels Patio Vignette2

Patti says, “There are many easy, fun, and inexpensive ways to turn your outdoor area into a fun and colorful place to hang out. Make your patio more of an outdoor room, and an extension of the home (cushioned wicker sets like the one below are all the rage now!) There are many comfortable seating and dining options that are outdoor friendly. You can also accessorize your outdoor space… with plants, lighting, and fabrics.”

Employees Giving Back: School Supply Drive

Steinhafels Sales Associates make it their mission to make sure customers feel welcome in our stores, and are happy with their purchases.

But their hard work and dedication doesn’t stop there.  Many of our associates take it upon themselves to go well beyond the doors of our stores… helping the communities we serve.

The latest display of generosity can be seen inside the office at our Waukesha store.  That’s where a work desk has been temporarily transformed into a ‘Back to School’ wonderland!

screenshot_165

Sales Associates Cheri Fuqua and Katie Wolf are heading up this very special school supply drive!

screenshot_160

Katie explains, “Anyone in any department can donate if they would like.  I love doing these events because we are fortunate enough to have a job, and it’s always nice to be able to give back to the community.  We all have a couple of bucks we can spare, so why not have everyone pitch in and give someone something they need that’s as simple as back to school supplies?  I really think this brings our team together and shows that all of us care and are willing to help those in need.”

screenshot_164

The drive is very close to Cheri’s heart.  The supplies will be distributed to inner city children at the 4th Annual Ms. Cynthia’s Back to School Bash.  What started as a grassroots effort a few years ago has grown into a community-wide event.  Cheri explains, “Ms.Cynthia was my tenant.  She’s an elementary school teacher with a heart of gold.  She put this event together because she saw a need.  Children in our community need a successful start to the school year.  This event brings a sense of community that was lost years ago.”

screenshot_166

Cheri says the event gets bigger each year.  “Last year we supplied 200 children with grade appropriate backpacks.  We fed over 300 children and adults.  We Entertained, we had a DJ,  clowns, face painting, nail techs, local barbers cutting hair, bounce houses, and basketball hoops.  Two youth won a bike and keyboard through Spelling Bees and Math contests.  The local Fire Department and Police Department joins us as well.  This year is going to be Off The Hook!  It’s a great event.”

So how can fellow Steinhafels employees help?  Just walk inside the Waukesha Store Office, and grab a couple Post-It notes listing various needed school supplies.  Items can be donated until August 21.

You can also show your support by coming out to the event!!  Ms. Cynthia’s Back to School Bash is Saturday August 27 from 11am-7pm, in the 2500 block of North 38th Street in Milwaukee.

DS Tip of the Week: “Love Lamp” Lighting Do’s & Don’ts

Do you love your room’s decor, but feel the lighting doesn’t quite ‘work’?  A fix may be easier than you think.  As the character Brick Tamland exclaimed in the movie Anchorman, “I love lamp.  I love lamp.”

Wise words indeed.

Brian Mueller is an interior designer based in our Vernon Hills store.  He has this week’s Decorating Solutions Tip of the Week!

Brian explains, “No room is complete without good lighting.  No matter how many ceiling lights you have in a room, you always need lamps to soften the mood.  Feel free to mix and match different table and floor lamps so they are not all ‘matchy matchy’, and to add character to a room.  It’s also another way to bring different finishes and textures into a room.  Steinhafels has so many different types of lighting to offer!  Also, swap out that ceiling fan in any room for a chandelier to instantly add character to a room.  You can even add a crystal chandelier to a room without making it formal, and without defining a particular design style.”

Check out some stylish and simple examples below.

DS Tip of the Week: Steampunk at Steinhafels

When it comes to interior design, there is often a relation to trends in pop culture and fashion.  This is the case with “Steampunk,” which is making a comeback.  Steampunk is defined as a style of design and fashion that combines historical elements with anachronistic technological features inspired by science fiction:  The essence of Steampunk is homage to vintage fashion with a modern twist.

This week’s Decorating Solutions Tip of the Week takes a closer look at this subgenre of science fiction, and how it has influenced design.  Jim Mallon is an interior designer at our Vernon Hills store.  He explains, “My design client was looking for a design that would incorporate the repurposed pieces of old barn timbers as a platform bed, pulleys as a accent lighting, and an 18th century style chair.  We designed the room to create a comfortable, anachronistic space that expressed the design aesthetic of the client.”

Here are some examples of Steampunk items available at Steinhafels.

Mallon says Steampunk can be a great design concept for a budget driven 21st century client.  So quit playing it safe, get out your old copies of “War of the Worlds” and “A Wrinkle In Time” for inspiration, and give your home a sci-fi, architectural flair.

We post a quick and easy decor tip each Monday.  Check in next week for another #DSTipOfTheWeek.

DS Tip of the Week: Keep It In The Family!

Spring is here!  Are you looking to refresh your room, but don’t want to spend money on a new set of furniture?  It’s time to make a trip to the attic, and take a step back in time!

This week’s tip comes from one of our Menomonee Falls #DecoratingSolutions designers.  Aaron Keller is known for his ability to take the old and make it new again.  He’s a master of the ‘Reclaimed’ look, and this week he’s talking about family heirlooms.

Aaron’s tip:  “Don’t be afraid to refresh a room with your antique pieces–turning your room from drab to fab!!  In the photo below, all of the furniture is the client’s.  By changing paint, floor, rug, accessories, lighting, seat upholstery, and wall color, you can really make your treasures shine.  Remember to use lemon oil to shine your antiques or new wood furniture.  I personally use Guardsman Lemon Oil on my wood pieces–sold at Steinhafels!”

Special Spaces & Steinhafels: A Shared Mission of Creating Dream Spaces

Here at Steinhafels we are of course very proud of our stores, products, and the high quality we offer our customers.  However, just as important is our commitment to the communities we serve.  So teaming up with Special Spaces was a no brainer.  They help make dreams come true through furniture, and so do we!!

screenshot_65

As Special Spaces explains on its website, the mission is simple but zealous:  “We create dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening medical illnesses.  This is a place that only the child can dream or imagine while addressing his or her medical needs.  Our focus is answering one question; Where does a child go when battling a serious illness to find peace and comfort?”

screenshot_66

We had the pleasure of talking with Ann Swain of the local chapter of Special Spaces, to learn a little more about the program to share with you, our blog readers.  Special Spaces was actually founded in Tennessee in 2004.  The founder has family ties to Wisconsin, and the organization started working on projects here in 2012.  Nationally, they have redesigned about 600 rooms, including 50 here in the Badger state.

Swain is devoted to Special Spaces.  As she explains, “I’m passionate about making a difference in our community.  We have 4 healthy children, and we like to think that together we make a difference.  We couldn’t do what we do without the amazing directors.”

screenshot_64

Steinhafels is just one of many organizations that has donated to help create dream rooms for these special little boys and girls.  It means a lot to many of our employees, and it shows.  Swain says, “We love Steinhafels on so many different levels.  We love the people, and all of the workers we have dealt with.”

Nothing is more powerful than hearing from the recipient families themselves. Here are just a couple testimonials:

“The boys just love it!  Brayden was Star of the Week at school and shared his whole Special Spaces experience.  They thought he was a celebrity.  Thank you!”

“Special Spaces is an amazing group of people that come together to bring smiles, laughter, and a positive outlook for families who are struggling.  It’s not a one time event; it’s a gift that stays with you for years to come.”

Steinhafels also had the honor of helping to “set the stage” for the Special Spaces Dream BIG Gala just a few weeks ago.  It’s a magical evening for everyone, and vital to keeping the mission going.

DS Tip Of The Week: Pattern Perfection

It’s time for another Decorating Solutions Tip of the Week!

Decorating with patterns can be tricky.  You don’t want to overdo it, but you also want to highlight your unique style.  Jenii Kluver is a #DecoratingSolutions Interior Decorator at our Oak Creek store.  Here’s her simple advice:

“Use different sized patterns to create interest without being too overwhelming.  Put larger patterns on larger pieces, and smaller patterns on smaller pieces.”

Sounds easy enough, right?  Tune in next week for another #DSTipOfTheWeek!

DS Tip of the Week: Dress Your Windows

Most of us love to have the beauty and warmth of natural light in our homes.  The one exception might be at 6 a.m. on a lazy Sunday morning in the middle of the summer, when the beaming sun wakes us from a restful slumber.  But as we Wisconsinites know all too well, we still have a few months until we have to worry about that.

In the meantime, the sun is a welcome sight during these late winter and early spring months.  However, you can’t count on the sun to do all the work.  You have to make sure you show your windows some love!  Windows are the topic of this week’s Steinhafels #DecoratingSolutions Tip of the Week.

Patti Stindt is an Interior Designer at our Madison Beltline store.  Her recommendation to homeowners:  Don’t forget about dressing the windows!

Patti says, “No matter what the size of the window or how high the ceilings, a vertical line in your designed space adds interest and warmth.  It is also a great way to add color, texture, or introduce another pattern.”

As you see in these pictures, some simple drapes add interest and depth to the room.  Our designers are hard at work on many more quick and easy design tips for you.  Check in next Monday for another #DSTipOfTheWeek.

DS Tip Of The Week: Timeless Textures

We all have hectic lives.  Let Steinhafels help make your life just a little simpler!  Every Monday we post an interior design tip that’s easy even for those who are design-challenged.  This week, we look at textures.

Our Decorating Solutions Tip of the Week comes from Interior Designer Dawn Adamec.  Dawn works at our Waukesha Corporate store, and helps customers across the state create the homes of their dreams.

Dawn’s tip on textures:  “If you are trying to keep a home’s design somewhat simple and classic, focus on the textures, not all the ‘extra stuff.’  People lead busy lives, and many want to keep their home design neutral, so it doesn’t go out of style in a few years.  One way to make a space look unique, without lots of different colors and patterns, is through various textures.  Textures are timeless, and a great way to add some dimension to a space!”

DS Tip of the Week: Make it ‘Fierce’ With Plaid and Fur

When it comes to interior design, sometimes the combinations you least expect yield the greatest results!

That brings us to this week’s #DecoratingSolutions Tip of the Week:  Plaid + Fur.  It’s a little bit of country meets chic, and looks oh so good!

This week’s tip comes from Madison Interior Decorator Hannah Peller.

Hannah’s words of wisdom:  “Plaids tend to be rather rustic and masculine.  Fur is feminine and delicate, yet fierce.  What they both have in common is a sense of warmth, which is perfect for winter.  Some of the best combinations are those that are least likely.  I love the balance this pattern and texture bring to a space.  It is unpredictable, and very inviting!”

So quit playing it safe, channel your inner Beyonce, and make your home “fierce.”  We post a quick and easy decor tip each Monday.  Check in next week for another #DSTipOfTheWeek.
