DS Tip Of The Week: Resist the Urge to be “Themey”

When planning an interior design project, you may be tempted to have a theme. Basic rule of thumb–don’t do that! While this can work for smaller, specialized spaces… being tied to a theme can be very restricting.

For this week’s Steinhafels #DecoratingSolutions Tip of the Week we look at ways to make sure you start off on the right foot! Dawn Adamec is an interior designer based in our Waukesha store. She stresses the importance of keeping your options open.

Dawn explains, “Once you lock into a theme you get stuck with a look. Conversely, if you maintain a more transitional look, it allows you to add and subtract pieces without having to do a complete makeover, and you can continue to freshen up the space just by adding a few items here and there.”

DS Tip of the Week: Starting Points

Everything needs a starting point–even design.  While this sounds obvious, actually CHOOSING that starting point can be tricky, and the point you pick could affect the overall project more than you think!

For this week’s #DecoratingSolutions Tip of the Week we look at ways to make sure you start off on the right foot.  Julie Thompson is an interior designer based in our Waukesha store.  She stresses the importance of choosing a starting point, and then making all of your follow-up decisions based on that item.

She explains, “A starting point can be as small as dishes in a dining room, a piece of artwork in an office, bed linens in a bedroom, or a rug in a living room.  Select that starting point, like a piece of artwork, and build off of that piece.  This helps you figure out the best way to arrange the rest of your wall hangings, or how to set up the furniture in the entire room.”

DS Tip of the Week: Stylish Storage

It’s Monday, and you’re probably feeling tired and a little uninspired.  Well, here’s your Steinhafels #DecoratingSolutions Tip of the Week to give you a burst of motivation!

This week we look at ways to make your storage stylish.  Just because it’s functional doesn’t mean it can’t be fun and trendy.

That brings us to our tip from Interior Decorator Laura Hoffman of our Appleton store:
“Incorporate storage wherever you can.  It’s easy–just measure the space and add fun baskets, containers, or other organizers.  These were just plain shelves at the end of a kitchen island before I transformed them into a fun and functional focal point!”
